Starting something new as an adult—especially something as physically and mentally challenging as a martial art—can feel intimidating. But for Debbie Bowron, the decision to join Taekwon-Do at 58 years old turned out to be one of the best things she’s ever done.
“I started in Taekwondo in September 2021. I was 58 years old. I had also done a mixed martial art called ‘Te-At-Su’ when I was 19, and that included a bit of Taekwondo. I always preferred this type, so that’s what inspired me to get back into it.”
For many adults, taking the leap into something new—particularly when surrounded by younger students—can stir up self-doubt. Debbie was no exception.
“Yes, I was worried—worried maybe I was too old to start, and that I wasn’t fit enough. But I went in with the mindset of, ‘I’ll never know unless I try.’”
“At first I was worried because I was one of the oldest, and I thought, everyone’s looking at me thinking I’m too old to keep up or be any good. But I didn’t worry about others being more experienced—we all train at different levels.”
From Hesitation to Determination
“The fact that I started, and I’m still going and showing up—it means a lot. When I think about how far I’ve come, what I’ve learnt, and how I’m still learning, it makes me proud.”
Debbie’s journey has included more than just learning patterns and sparring techniques. A few years ago, she was diagnosed with a major health condition that left her blind in one eye—something that had a profound impact on her confidence.
“It hit me hard. My confidence hit a real low in everything. But I was determined not to quit all my hard work and training. So I continued to attend. With all the support and help from my instructors, my confidence has grown vastly.”
More Benefits Than Challenges
Some people assume martial arts will be too hard to pick up later in life, but Debbie’s experience paints a very different picture.
“There haven’t been many challenges really. I’ve actually had more benefits—like better fitness, a more positive mindset. Obviously I’m not as agile as some, but it hasn’t stopped me at my age. I just practise more.”
“Every belt means an achievement of my work, learning, and progress—even more so at my age.”
“Short term, I just take each week as it comes and be proud. Long term, my goal is to achieve higher belts.”
“One of my proudest moments was coming back after my health issue with my eye and not letting it define me—especially participating in the club competition.”
A Place That Feels Like Family
One of the things Debbie speaks most passionately about is the community she found at Worcestershire Martial Arts.
“At first I was nervous joining any club after I moved house. But from day one of joining Worcester Martial Arts, the atmosphere and support I received was second to none. We are like a supported family unit, and everyone is made to feel welcome.”
“The Taekwondo community—we are like a family. Everyone supports each other, not just through Taekwondo but through any personal challenges. I’ve never felt old or treated differently. I’ve come too far and trained too hard to be where I am.”
“I get a lot of motivation from my family, my friends, and everyone at my club—especially my instructors.”
For Anyone Thinking About Starting
“We all feel hesitant at first, but you never know unless you try! You’ll surprise yourself. Like anything, it’s hard at first—but the encouragement and support gets you through. And you won’t be judged on your age or ability.”
Whether you’re 28 or 68, it’s never too late to take that first step. Debbie’s journey is a powerful reminder that Taekwon-Do isn’t just about kicks and belts—it’s about confidence, connection, and self-belief.
